May 22 COVID-19 Update
It takes all of us to combat this unprecedented time. We must continue to do our part by maintaining safe distances, wearing face masks, and washing our hands frequently. Together, we can protect our families, neighbors, and communities.
This week, Governor Northam took several new steps to provide relief to Virginia communities, and I wanted to make sure you had the latest updates:
- Several regions have entered into Phase One of Governor Northam’s “Forward Virginia” Plan. The City of Richmond, Accomack County, and several localities in Northern Virginia are still delayed under Executive Order 62 and will begin Phase One no sooner than midnight on Thursday, May 28th.
- The Governor announced more than $95 million in federal grants to support state and local criminal justice programs. This funding will help support behavioral health programs for those who are currently incarcerated and are preparing to return to their communities. In addition, this funding will support victim services, child advocacy programs, and pre-trial and post incarceration services.
- The Administration launched a website in partnership with VHDA and the Department of Housing and Community Development called “StayHomeVirginia.” This website has tools, information, and resources for renters, homeowners, landlords, and those experiencing homelessness.
To ensure the health and safety of voters in the upcoming elections, voting by absentee ballot is highly encouraged.
- All voters may request an absentee ballot using “Reason 2A: My Disability or Illness.” The last day to request an absentee ballot for the June primary is June 16th at 5:00pm, and all ballots must be returned to the Office of Elections by 7:00pm on June 23rd. Absentee by mail ballots do not require a witness signature on the return envelope for this primary election.
The Administration has coordinated with the VDH and local health departments to expand the capacity for community testing across the Commonwealth.
- More than 4,000 tests were performed in Woodbridge, Manassas, and Leesburg this week. Prince William County has launched two drive-thru testing sites.
Finally, effective June 1, 2020, all persons entering the Prince William County Judicial Center must wear a face covering that covers their nose and mouth at all times. The requirement for face coverings include judges, attorneys, deputy sheriffs, court reporters, employees, members of the public, contractors, and all others who work in or visit the courthouse.
